What happens at a chimney sweeping appointment?

A sweep clears the creosote and soot that wood fires leave on the inside of the flue. Creosote burns, and a thick layer is what feeds a chimney fire. We take it out with rods, brushes and a HEPA-filtered vacuum, then check that the chimney pulls smoke up the way it should.

Before a brush goes in, we cover the floor along our path, put on shoe covers and tent off the hearth opening. With the HEPA vacuum pulling air from the moment we start, loose soot is drawn into the filter instead of drifting into your room. When we finish, you get a plain summary of the chimney’s condition, with photos of any spot we’d keep an eye on.

Our sweeping process, step by step

  • Protect the room. Drop cloths, shoe covers and a tented hearth opening.
  • Look before we sweep. A Level 1 check, so we know what the chimney needs.
  • Sweep the flue. Rods and brushes clear creosote from the top of the flue down to the firebox.
  • Vacuum and detail. HEPA vacuuming of the firebox, smoke shelf and damper.
  • Report. What we found, photos, and clear next steps if anything needs work.

We sweep wood stoves and fireplace inserts as well as open masonry fireplaces.

How often does a chimney need sweeping around Lake Minnetonka?

Once a year for a fireplace or stove you use through the winter, and sooner if you burn most nights. Homes here run their fireplaces hard through a long Minnesota winter, and even seasoned hardwood leaves creosote behind. The U.S. EPA’s Burn Wise program notes that dry, seasoned hardwood produces far less creosote than green or wet wood. A yearly sweep matters most in older Wayzata, Orono and Excelsior homes that still have their original masonry flues.

Our cost guide shows typical sweeping prices, and a call to (952) 463-4513 gets you a firm quote for your own chimney.

FAQ

Chimney sweeping questions

How long does a chimney sweep take?

Most standard cleanings take 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the fireplace and how much buildup there is. A chimney that has gone years between sweeps can take longer.

Is chimney sweeping messy?

It stays clean. We tent off the hearth opening and run HEPA-filtered vacuums the whole time, so the soot stays inside the tent and off your furniture.

How do I know if my chimney needs cleaning?

If you’ve burned roughly a cord of wood, see black flaky buildup, notice a strong campfire smell, or can’t remember your last sweep, it’s time. If you’re unsure, we inspect first and clean only when the chimney needs it.

When is the best time of year to have a chimney swept?

Spring and summer are the easiest seasons to get the day you want, with the fireplace cool and the burning season behind you. If fall suits you better, call before the first cold snap and we’ll find a time that works.
