Your chimney and fireplace questions

Clear answers for Wayzata and Lake Minnetonka homeowners on sweeping, inspections, cost and safety. To ask the crew directly, call (952) 463-4513.

How often should I have my chimney swept?

Sweep whenever your yearly inspection shows creosote building up. For most wood-burning homes around the lake, that means a sweep each fall before the first fire. Gas fireplaces need a yearly service too.

How much does a chimney sweep cost near Wayzata?

We look at your chimney first and put the price in writing before any work starts. Typical ranges for sweeping, inspections and repairs are in our cost guide.

What is creosote and why is it dangerous?

Creosote is the tar-like residue wood smoke leaves inside the flue. It is highly flammable and is what ignites most chimney fires. Regular sweeping keeps it from building to a dangerous level.

Do I need a Level 2 inspection to sell my home?

Under NFPA 211, a home sale is one of the points where a Level 2 camera inspection is recommended. It is a national safety standard rather than a Minnesota requirement, but buyers’ inspectors often flag chimneys, and a documented Level 2 report keeps the sale moving.

Why does my fireplace get wet after a storm?

Rain usually gets in at the top of the chimney: a cracked crown, a cap that has gone missing, or mortar joints that have opened up. We trace the leak to its source, fix that spot and seal the masonry so it stays dry. More on caps and crowns and masonry repair.

My fireplace smells or smokes into the room. What’s wrong?

Common causes include creosote buildup, a blocked flue, a damper issue, or a draft problem. An inspection pinpoints it quickly, and often a good sweep resolves it.

Is your crew licensed, bonded and insured?

It is. Prestige carries a license, a bond and insurance, and our crew brings more than fifteen years of chimney and fireplace work to every job we take on.
